A after suffering sweeping losses to Clear Springs and a heartbreaker to St Agnes, the Lady Cardinals could use the healing which comes from a good win.

And our Cardinals really needed a little healing potion.

Fresh off a win over Northland Christian and a solid performance in the Magnolia Tournament, the Falcons of Clear Lake had traveled into The Nest last Tuesday with the idea to continue their winning ways: which turned out to be just what the doctor ordered for Bellaire.

As usual, the freshmen were up first.  Coach Tomlinson’s Cardinal “Chicks” just keep getting better and better.  Undiscouraged after dropping the first set, these freshmen came back to win the match  (22-25, 25-21, 25-17); setting up the home court advantage for the JV match.  Coach Martin’s JV squad took the positive energy to the next level and “went off” on the Falcons; sweeping Clear Lake in two sets (25-19. 25-12).  The Lady Cards had major contributions from Alyss Kerl, Toni Lott, Sandy Song and Erin Eby.  Bellaire fans rocked The Nest as the JV team walked off the court.

The tone was set for the varsity who had limped out of the Spring Branch ISD tournament with several key players’ sitting out the final matches; nursing sprains, pulls and bruises. Clear Lake also had their share of injuries going without kill leader, Katya Silvera.  Like Bellaire High, Clear Lake has a strong volleyball tradition and a deep team of highly skilled players.  Both teams would be without their normal complement of starters; but, filled with confidence about their ability to win.

The Cardinals got off to a shaky start. Halfway through the first set, seniors Maya Evans and Evony Nelson entered the match and provided a surge of offensive firepower.  With solid serve receive and defense from senior Ella Hawes delivered the ball (14 diggs, 3 aces) to Megan Evans; who picked an chose a an array of air attack weapons.  The evening’s highlight film would be filled with Armyni Perales.  Recently moved from OH to middle, Perales has found a home where delivered 6 kills with great athleticism.  Maya Evans, now playing as an outside hitter, delivered 7 convincing kills.   Codi Fillmore was among the top producers from the right side with 6 kills on the night.  The Lady Cardinal varsity squad took care of the Falcons from Clear Lake in 4 sets (25-17 25-13, 23-25, 25-18).

Congratulations Lady Cardinals for defending The Nest against the Clear Lake Falcons.
