District 20 Champion, Bellaire High swept the mighty Katy Tigers from District 19 in 3 straight sets (25-15, 25-18, 250-15).

Cardinal Fans
Thank you Cardinal fans who took off from work early and traveled up to 2 hours to watch Bellaire's 5:30 pm match on Monday. With the Merrell Center located next door to Katy High School, the competition was virtually a home game for the Tigers. This is a special Cardinal team and we have some of the very best fans around!  For those who missed the match, it can be viewed online HERE

Cardinals Sweep Katy
Bellaire unleashed a balanced air attack on Katy, as three Cardinals racked up double digit kills against the Tigers: Travana Matthews (11 kills), Maya Evans (10 kills) and Sundara Chinn (10 kills).  Matthews and Evans owned the middle; hitting a unbelievable .688 and .625 respectively.  With a masterful distribution of kill opportunities, Megan Evans kept Katy's frontline guessing on defense.  Evans evenly distributed 16 attempts to both middles, Chinn received 24 balls on the right side and Jade Robins had 20 attempts from the outside.

From the onset, Katy tried to disrupt Bellaire's heaviest arm, Sundara Chinn.  Bellaire's kill leader found herself playing defense more than usual; finishing with a team high 13 serves received and 3 blocks to go along with her 8 digs.  Katy picked on team captain, Jade Robison; who also saw a bump in her defensive stats; she finished with 6 kills, 8 digs, 8 serves received, 1 block and 1 ace.  In another failed tactic, Katy tried to draw in the middles hitters with short serves.  Ap Clarke credited Isabelle Long for countering several difficult short serves with excellent passing and a solid defensive performance across the back line.  But, the highlight of the match came early in the third set when Ella Hawes went on a 9 point serving run to put the Cardinals ahead with an early 10-1 lead.  The Tigers had no answer for Bellaire's serving ace; who dropped 3 aces on Katy during the run.  Hawes forced Katy to take an early timeout and to make several unscheduled substitutions as the Tigers looked for ways to stop the bleeding in their serve receive defense.  Hawes ending up taking herself off the backline when her 10th serve missed out the back by inches. But, with a commanding lead, Bellaire easily finished the sweep; extending the Cardinal's 2015 3-set sweep streak to 19 consecutive matches.

After the match, Clarke said, "We are happy to get a win. We did not play the way we are capable of playing and we have a lot of things to address in practice this week.  If we are to keep our season going, we need to play like we did in August."

While the Cardinals were sweeping Katy at the Merrell Center Monday night, District 20's fourth place finisher, Carnegie Vanguard faced an undefeated Cinco Ranch team at Cinco Ranch High School.  The Rhinos fell quickly in straight sets (6-25, 5-25, 11-25).  Tuesday, District 20's third and second place finishing teams, Westside and Lamar, traveled west to Katy ISD's Merrell Center.  Westside was swept in 3 sets by Seven Lakes (10-25, 11-25, 13-25) followed by Katy-Taylor sweeping the Lamar Texas (25-8, 25-13, 25-7).  In neighboring District 18, only Memorial High School was able to advanced into the Area Playoffs; defeating Cy-Ranch 3-2 (25-21,18-25, 25-23, 10-25,15-11).
