Tuesday night, the Bellaire Lady Cardinals finished the pre-district schedule by traveling to Friendswood to take on the Clear Brook Wolverines.

The Lady Cardinal Freshman began the evening’s competition a bit slow with a series of self-inflected mistakes.  Early in the match, the Freshmen were plagued with missed serves, miscommunication, and hesitation.  Coach Tomlinson said after the game; “I wondered if we were still on holiday after the long Memorial Day weekend.  When they turned up the focus and intensity, the hole they had dug was too deep to climb out of." Despite some strong kills by Annika Bohmann and Toni Lott, the Freshman dropped the first set (16-25); but, they had captured the momentum and took it into the second set.  Tomlinson summarized the second set by saying; “we got strong serves and precise passing from Sydney Sizemore and a slew of service aces from Nadia Rasheed."  "Strong net play came from Annika Bohmann, Rein Dolarmente and Toni Lott thanks to some stellar sets from Mikaela Medina and Megan Hafer."  Although we ended up short in the second set (23-25), there were some very good things we saw in that game.”

Coach Martin said; "the girls played a tough match on Tuesday vs Clear Brook."  They came out strong in the 1st game; winning it 25-20."  "McKenna Compton led the Lady Cardinal JV team in serving and hitting."  After falling short in the 2nd set (20-25), the tie-breakomg 3rd set saw the Cardinals get off to a very slow start.  With Clear Brook ahead by 14 points the JV squad refocused and made a major push.  Coach Martin said after the contest; “The girls fought back hard in the third set with Henna Calderon adding 11 points through great serving; but, we lost 18-25.”  The JV team had a solid performance against the preseason slate of competitors and they are looking forward to beginning district competition later in the week.

The Cardinal varsity squad used their competition with Clear Brook as a final tune-up before beginning district play later in the week.  Bellaire completely handled the Wolverines on their home floor in Friendswood; sweeping Clear Brook 3-0.  Again, Bellaire received strong play at the net from Sundara Chinn, Maya Evans, Bri Kelly and Clair Smith.  Coach Clarke commented “We started off and ended strong against Clear Brook. Claire Smith led us with 14 kills.”  Libero Katie Fairbanks demonstrated her usual high level play across the back row.  Coach Clarke and the varsity squad is ready to begin district competition.
